About ChinaBite
Our Story
ChinaBite was born from a simple frustration: outside of China, it is surprisingly difficult to find truly authentic Chinese recipes in English. Too many "Chinese recipes" online are Americanized versions β gloopy sweet-and-sour sauces, vegetables swimming in cornstarch, or dishes that no one in China actually eats.
We built ChinaBite to be different. Every recipe on this site is the real thing β the way it is actually cooked in homes and restaurants across China. No shortcuts. No compromises. Just authentic, delicious Chinese food that you can make in your own kitchen, wherever you are in the world.
Our Mission
We believe that understanding a culture starts with its food. Our mission is to:
- Share authentic recipes that are actually cooked in China β not simplified Western imitations.
- Demystify Chinese ingredients β what they are, where to buy them, and how to use them.
- Explain the techniques behind Chinese cooking, from stir-frying to red-braising to the art of dumpling folding.
- Introduce the Eight Great Cuisines (ε «ε€§θη³») β the regional cooking traditions that make Chinese food so incredibly diverse.
- Connect food lovers worldwide to the rich culinary heritage of China.
What Makes Us Different
Authentic Recipes
Every recipe is the real version β the way it's cooked in Chinese homes and restaurants, with proper techniques and ingredients.
For Everyone
We write for food lovers who have never been to China β clear instructions, pronunciation guides, and honest explanations of what makes each dish special.
Deep Knowledge
We go beyond recipes β into the culture, history, and philosophy behind every dish. Because food is never just food in China.
The Eight Great Cuisines
China is not a single cuisine β it is a continent of flavors. The Eight Great Culinary Traditions (ε «ε€§θη³») each have distinct characteristics:
- Sichuan (ε·θ): Bold, spicy, and numbing β the iconic ma la flavor
- Cantonese (η²€θ): Fresh, delicate, seafood-focused, mastering dim sum
- Hunan (ζΉθ): Hot, sour, and smoky β for those who love bold heat
- Shandong (ι²θ): The oldest tradition β savory, seafood-rich, imperial roots
- Jiangsu (θθ): Refined, elegant, beautifully presented
- Zhejiang (ζ΅θ): Fresh, light, and seasonal
- Fujian (ι½θ): Umami-rich broths and delicate seafood
- Anhui (εΎ½θ): Hearty mountain food, wild herbs, and game
Explore them all on our Cuisines page.
